Excerpts from, “Thoughts, Notes, and Remarks: To Be Born In Water”- An Essay

  • "When I received the invitation for this semester-long Independent Study, I began to feel like a child again in certain aspects. Vivid imagination was reignited, and the natural competitive spirit fell back into my mindset. Sleep grew to be foreign, and the few moments of it being familiar were met with visions in my dreams."

  • "I grew up in a place surrounded by water that was the electronic heartbeat of the world. I had believed it pulsated through fast hoopty’s and hellcats with bass-boosted speakers set to 97.9 WJLB radio. And though my adolescent mindset wasn’t far off, my ideology of my city could be transferred to another outlet"

  • “To be born in water”. This is a phrase that laid heavy on my chest this semester as I strived to answer the question...I initially concluded that “The water” symbolized the world in which you weigh whether to sink or drown....The water began as the carrier of African drum beats, mutating into young boys selling water bottles on the corner to keep the faucet running. “The water” represents the fuel that drives creative expression. The water is the African Amerikkkan culture...To be born in water is to be the Sons and Daughters of Drexciya born in the Black Atlantic. To be born in water is not only learning to breathe, but to live and prosper in an environment surrounded by the sacrifice of our ancestors for a free world."

Excerpts from, “it’s been a while, there’s sum in the water”: A verse

“And sometimes it’s as soft as the misty rain, other times it’s like a bad day dream,

Where cash rules everything around me and streamers speak the strangest things in attempts to sell to main stream,

These are the sentiments that are building our next gen’s self esteem”

“I was born in Amerikkkan Water with sharks who had to change their ways of being a fish,

It’s still liquid in my drums so I drain them out as I reminisce”

“Being born in the water made me wanna go harder,

The Black Atlantic is the bed to all the truest martyrs

That’s why it’s sum in the water,

It’s something in the water”
